Originally conceived by architects Don Erickson and Dennis Stephens — who met while working for Frank Lloyd Wright in Chicago before founding their own practice — Rockhouse was designed to feel “of the land” rather than simply built upon it. The hotel’s 40 handcrafted villas and rooms blend seamlessly into the dramatic natural landscape, combining locally inspired architecture, open-air living, and sweeping Caribbean sunset views with a distinctly relaxed Jamaican spirit. Through the Rockhouse Foundation, the hotel and its owners have invested more than US$11 million into education and community projects across Western Jamaica, including schools, libraries, and Jamaica’s first fully inclusive public school serving children with and without disabilities together. The foundation’s work is substantially underwritten by the hotel and its owners, with approximately one-third of profits supporting its ongoing initiatives and operations.
